Raves and Reviews. OK, so that's the formula for all the Reacher novels, clothed in a different plot each time, but it works. An entertaining read - what's not to like? View all 4 comments. Aug 18, Corey rated it it was amazing Shelves: suspense-thriller. Sigh I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again, I can't get enough of Jack Reacher, I think he's becoming my new addiction, after the end of each book, it just leaves me wanting more, and The Hard Way is no exception!! This time Jack Reacher finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, or is it the other way around, in the right place at the right time?
As he's enjoying a nice day in New York City, he watches a man cross the street to a Mercedes and drive it away, it would seem Sigh I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again, I can't get enough of Jack Reacher, I think he's becoming my new addiction, after the end of each book, it just leaves me wanting more, and The Hard Way is no exception!!
As he's enjoying a nice day in New York City, he watches a man cross the street to a Mercedes and drive it away, it would seem like a normal thing to do, only it contained 1 million dollars in ransom money, from Edward Lane, who runs his own illegal operation, with his own small private army of ex-soldiers, former US Marines, Delta Force, Navy Seals, et cetera, et cetera! Reacher joins Lane's operation when learning that his wife and daughter have been kidnapped and he will stop at nothing to get them back.
But as Reacher follows the trail of the supposed kidnappers, he realizes Lane is not all that he seems, and he puts all his superior skills to use to get to the bottom of a little war, and he's doing it the hard way! Everything you'd expect from Jack Reacher and Lee Child!! Jun 21, Carol rated it really liked it. The Hard Way is a classic Jack Reacher novel - great pacing, clues are there but you'll miss them until Reacher identifies them, and Reacher puts away a slew of bad guys by himself at the end.
Generally, this is a fun read with all the elements you expect.
Two things work less well than in a typical Reacher novel though. First, there's no real tension or believable relationship between Reacher and a former-FBI agent with whom he has several consensual romps. Second, the reader isn't made to care The Hard Way is a classic Jack Reacher novel - great pacing, clues are there but you'll miss them until Reacher identifies them, and Reacher puts away a slew of bad guys by himself at the end.
Second, the reader isn't made to care what happened or happens, as the case may be, to 2 ersatz kidnapping victims. Several other Reacher novels are much stronger on both of these points. Make this the 10th or so Reacher novel you read: not the first. Having said that, it's a great beach read, as they say. Weak 3 stars.
3 the Hard Way Rmx
Not as good as other Reacher books. Mostly solving a mystery. Not enough action. But it kept my interest. Reacher soon learns that this man was a kidnapper picking up ransom money. Lane asks Reacher to help find them. Lane runs a group of military mercenaries for hire. Not enough smart things were being done, either by the bad guys or the good guys.
Seven the Hard Way
There is almost no action until the end of the book. The best Reacher stories have been thrillers, with a bad guy plotting and trying to harm Reacher. This is not a thriller. But because I like the character Reacher so much, I was ok with this. I disagree. In that sense, it fits. Reacher is not as talkative as others. I was disappointed that the author did not show one scene. A female does something stupid which allows the bad guys to capture her and others.
It was told, not shown. In one scene the good guys are safe in their house. In the next scene they are tied up in another location and being hurt by the bad guys. I had one other problem. I almost wish I had not read the book because one back story was too horrible for me. Two soldiers were captured and kept in an African prison for five years, with body amputations and repulsive living conditions. I suggest reading the books in order, but not required. I gave 4 or more stars to all of the preceding books except four: Running Blind, Without Fail, The Enemy, and this one.

Ending: pleasant and feel good. Jul 06, Eddie Owens rated it liked it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Reacher doesn't just think outside of the box, he takes the box, throws it away and comes up with impossible deductions. The case is solved because a kid's bedroom doesn't have any old toys in it. Yeah, I know, right? Eat it, Sherlock Homeboy. All Reacher wants is to spend some time soaking New York as much as he can. But as fate would have it, he gets caught up in a case.
learn (something) the hard way
Edward involves the police and pays the ransom to no end. Then he hires Jack Reacher to finish the job. Is that his best or worst move? Because Edward Lane has a history that Jack Reacher is bound to find out… I love this series like no other. Jack Reacher is a guy who deliv All Reacher wants is to spend some time soaking New York as much as he can.
Jack Reacher is a guy who delivers time and again and he did not fail this time either. The book is filled with action and drama and not a dull moment. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Reacher doing his thing. The only fault I can find with this book is the pacing in the middle which lagged a bit while we waited for Reacher to work out everything.
Jun 23, CJ Bowen rated it liked it. Lessons learned: kidnappings are never as simple as they appear. Pay attention when a main character goes to Staples. England is the best place for vigilante killings, but use quiet automatic weapons, because loud ones scare British people.
